What is a Cold Storage Insulated Door
Cold storage insulated doors are an insulated type of door common with large industries needing long-term storage solutions. Businesses utilize these doors to maintain cold or freezing temperatures in cold storage rooms while a positive temperature remains on the exterior. From a specific industrial application to a food manufacturer, different company products requiring a stable temperature benefit significantly in a freezer or cold room. These industrial doors are easy to install and are available in a variety of materials. They come equipped with a thick door leaf with significant insulation. There are many different door types available depending on the industry and application.
Cleanliness
An insulated cold storage door panel ensures ultimate cleanliness for food inside a freezer. The construction uses food-safe material and is thick enough to prevent exterior contaminants from entering freezer rooms.
Affordable to install
Not all freezer doors need a sealant to keep air out. Depending on the design of the door, you may save money if the installation doesn’t require sealant.
Flat, smooth design
High-quality cold room door materials leave a sleek, seamless look. This design also contributes to the controlled temperature in the cold room.
Energy efficiency
These doors are also excellent energy-saving solutions—their ability to keep cold temperatures in and warm air out results in better energy efficiency. Your products will stay at the ideal temperature, and you won’t have to use as much cooling power to keep them protected.
Increased worker productivity and customer comfort
Cold temperatures in the workplace result in lower productivity among employees. If cold air leaks from your business’s cold room doors, customers and employees may feel the effects. When you install insulated cold room doors for your cold storage room or freezer, you’ll notice productivity and comfort levels increase within the workplace.
Well-protected products
Some items cannot withstand certain temperatures. An ineffective cold room or cold room doors lead to spoiled food products and other mishaps. An insulated cold room door’s convenient features prevent temperature and air leakage to keep food and other products safe.
A wide selection
Insulated cold room doors of every size, shape, type, and color are available. Consider options like hinged doors, high-speed doors, options with mounted openers, and other quality choices.
Key Things to Consider When Looking for a Cold Storage Insulated Door
Door Type
Depending on the cooling power you need, the door type will significantly affect how cool your cold room is. Two types of doors are available: refrigeration doors and sub-zero doors. Refrigeration doors are ideal for cold rooms above freezing temperatures. They’re common in grocery stores and cold storage facilities. Sub-zero doors are ideal for frozen foods and other items that must stay in freezers for long periods. They have even less airflow, preventing items from thawing.
Other Additions
The structure of many freezer room and cold room builds allows for additional door attachments that prevent warm air from entering the space. Whether you have hinged or sliding cold room doors, you can add further protection. Other inclusions work well to decrease contamination and prevent warm air from entering through cold room doors when people walk in. Air curtains are popular choices for a walk-in cold room or freezer door. Some curtains push debris and insects away from the freezer storage area as the warm air surges towards the door. They can also trap pockets of heat. These air curtains are beneficial in rooms with multiple sections. Efficient designs using air curtains allow companies to combine chiller sections with freezer sections in the same cold storage room, keeping the most frigid air at the back of the room.
Water Resistance
Not all cold room doors are water-resistant. Water and humidity can lead to mold, door panel warping, and other structure-related problems. Freezer room doors in high-humidity climates are particularly prone to these problems. If your freezer or cold room frame isn’t flush with the floor or has space for mold and dirt to collect, you risk more contamination and quicker wear and tear on the door panel. Consider a water-resistant and humidity-resistant door. Such doors have better longevity and keep the entire structure sealed.
Interior Opening Solutions
The last thing you want is an emergency at your company. Regardless of foot traffic in your place of business, the cold room doors you choose should feature an access system on the inside of the entrances to prevent workers from getting stuck inside. Swinging doors and sliding doors are among the most popular options compatible with interior door openers. Cold room doors should have temperature-resistant openers and use materials that don’t stiffen or stick. Additionally, mechanisms should work on both sides of the door. If it does get stuck, the door opening mechanism should also be easy to service.
Opening Speed and Type
A fast-closing door ensures warm air has little time to enter the cold room. This door type is essential to allow traffic through quickly without allowing large volumes of warm or room-temperature air into the cold room. For this reason, high-speed doors, swinging doors, and hinged cold room doors are among the most popular types across the country. Automatic and manual options are available. Choose a faster closing door type for maximum temperature protection.
Insulation Levels
The right insulation level varies depending on the products and materials you must store. You’ll need more insulation for lower temperatures. Consider whether you need multiple chambers for frozen items or are storing items closer to room temperature. Cold room doors come with single or multiple insulation levels depending on the needs of your setup. Significant variety means there is a door insulation level for every need and temperature range. You can choose up to three layers with the top models.
Types of Cold Storage Insulated Doors
Swinging or In-fit Cold Room Doors
A hinged door for your cold room works similarly to the doors in your home or office building. Hinged doors, or swinging doors, are a popular option for small doorways. Swinging doors operate by opening up into one side of the area. The width of your door panel will determine what size hinged door your facility needs. A manufacturer may prefer swinging cold room doors to improve a person’s passage space through smaller refrigerated chambers. Swinging doors provide a secure doorway and they provide a safe exit or means of egress for these rooms.
Sliding Cold Room Door
Sliding doors are another popular door panel option for cold rooms. Unlike swing doors, sliding doors do not open into one side. Instead, they save space by sliding across the wall and opening up the doorway into the freezer.Sliding doors require specialized seals to insulate a cold room properly. The type of seal needed will depend on the technical characteristics of the cold room. This also means that sliding doors are not as easy to install and will require professional installation. While a swinging door is ideal for a small doorway, a sliding door works best for large doorways. They will typically have wider door jambs requiring thicker freezer doors. Using sliding cold room doors instead of swinging doors saves space and creates a more straightforward entryway.
High-Speed Doors
High-speed doors are ideal for intensive operations with heavy traffic and large doorways. The main purpose of a high-speed door is to open and close a person’s passage as efficiently as possible.A high-speed door is a convenient option for warehouses or industrial freezers. They operate similar to a garage door as they quickly roll to open and close. High-speed freezer doors effectively protect the thermal insulation of a room by allowing as little heat in as possible while keeping the cold in.Although some high-speed doors can be used for small doorways, most industrial facilities prefer to use them for large doorways where a sliding door cannot be used due to limited side-to-side clearance. Their ability to quickly close and open makes it an ideal option for industrial-sized refrigerated chambers wanting to keep the maximum amount of cold in the room.
Preventive Maintenance Tips for Cold Storage Insulated Doors

Visual Damage Inspection
Visually inspect key door components such as the head assembly, side panels, door panels and door seals. Here’s what to look for:
(1)Head assembly: Inspect for dents or damage that may prevent the door from opening or closing properly.
(2)Door panel: Inspect the panel for holes, tears and worn areas. Clean or replace them as needed.
(3)Side columns and covers: Inspect them for any damage that may prevent the door from operating properly.
(4)Photo eyes: Inspect the lens of each photo eye for damage or dirt that may prevent them from working properly. Clean or replace them as needed.
(5)Warning lights: Inspect the lens of each light for damage or dirt that may prevent them from working properly. Clean or replace them as needed.
(6)Bottom bar: Inspect the bottom bar for damaged, missing or loose hardware. Inspect the black vinyl seal along the lower edge of the bottom bar for tears and holes. Inspect the edge itself.
Door Operation Inspection
Run the door through four or five full open and close cycles to make sure it’s operating smoothly and efficiently. There should be no binding or unusual noises as the door travels across the head assembly. Also, as the door opens and closes, verify that the panels remain in contact with the door retention system and that they seal properly.
Reversing Edge Inspection
Many high-performance doors incorporate a reversing edge, which changes the door’s direction when it encounters an obstacle. While the door is running through a down cycle, tap the bottom of the reversing edge. If it’s operating properly, the door will immediately reverse and return to the fully open position. Push the control panel down arrow key to close the door after you’ve completed your inspection.
Side Columns
High-performance doors utilize bulb or brush seals to ensure that when the door is closed, air infiltration is minimized. Inspect the side column seals for wear and damage. Replace if necessary.
Photo Eye Inspection
Inspect the photo eye mounting brackets and photo eyes for visible damage or misalignment. Verify that each of the photo eyes operates. Test each one by placing an object within its field of vision to verify that it properly detects it.
Mounting Hardware Inspection
With the power to the door turned off, check that the mounting hardware securing the door header assembly and photo eye mounting brackets to the wall are in place and tight. Tighten and replace any loose or missing hardware, such as wall fasteners, floor anchors, nuts, bolts and screws. Check that all the self-tapping screws used to secure the bulb seals are tight and in place. Tighten and replace any loose or missing hardware.Check that all mounting hardware, such as nuts, bolts and screws throughout the head assembly, drive motor gearbox assembly, idler assembly, trolleys and mounting brackets are secure and tight. Tighten and replace any loose or missing hardware as needed.
Insulated Door Panel & Door Seal Inspection
Door panels and bulb seals should be regularly checked for ice buildup, damage and wear. Ice buildup in and around the bulb seal gaskets and the door path can cause erratic operation, potentially damage mechanical systems, allow air infiltration and increase energy use. Ice buildup can also cause a potential safety hazard.Where used, bulb seals should last 36 to 48 months with proper stay roller pressure and adjustment. Look for any rips or tears to the thermoplastic exoskeleton of the door panel. They should be fixed using a repair kit. Inspect the floor sweep or vinyl loop/edge seal along the bottom edge of each door panel. The cover should not be frayed, torn or loose. Replace or adjust as necessary. Because there typically is a sweep around each panel face, you’ll need to use your fingers to verify the seal along the floor on both sides of the panel. The seal below the door panel should be a full seal with the floor. There should be no gaps along the entire width of the panel. Floor sweep seals are normal wear items and may need to be replaced approximately every two years, depending on usage and the local environment. Replace them as needed.
Heaters & Blowers
Heaters and blowers are instrumental in preventing the build-up of ice and frost around the door threshold. Inspect them to make sure they’re working properly.
